The Small Back Garden

Mr and Mrs W
Colne Engaine, Suffolk

This back garden was mostly lawn. It had a new conservatory and needed a new garden to go with it.

The Brief
The clients wanted an outside dining area next to the conservatory, a corner sitting area for a swing seat and an area for herb growing. They were not keen gardeners so needed easy plants which would look after themselves. The three recycling bins by the back door needed to be less of a prominent feature.

The Garden
A deck was constructed between the conservatory and the back door of the kitchen. It was diagonally boarded in two sections to look less blocky. The lawn area was reshaped into a rough oval and a wrought iron arch was installed for climbers to give some height and interest. There were two raised planters for herbs. The corner area for the swing seat would be flanked by the fragrant orange rose ‘Lady Emma Hamilton.’ The three recycling bins were rehoused in a purpose-built, wooden bin store and were relocated to the side of the garden.
