The Riverside Garden

Mr and Mrs C
Boxford, Suffolk

A typical rectangular garden which needed a design to make it appear larger and more square.  The river at the bottom of the garden was prone to occasional flooding.

The Brief
The garden had a rectangular lawn area with narrow borders around the edges. An unsightly shed opposite the patio needed some screening. The existing planting alongside the river needed raising to prevent the river washing over the garden during times of flood. A path next to the river needed to be improved and stabilised.

The Garden
The lawn area was made into the shape of two intersecting circles with deep borders surrounding it. A raised bed made from new railway sleepers was made next to the riverside path and the path itself was laid with a gravel stabilisation system (geotextile membrane with a polypropylene honeycomb grid to hold the gravel in place). All paths were laid with Terca Olde Essex bricks in a basketweave pattern. The shed was screened using a pergola faced with a contemporary trellis panel constructed using horizontal battens.
