Country Garden with a Pond

Mr E
Edwardstone, Suffolk

This was a large lawned garden fronting a barn conversion.

The Brief
The client wanted a large wildlife pond with a waterfall and an accompanying decked pontoon on which to relax and also do some pond dipping. The client also wanted a few trees to blend the pond into the garden landscape and the countryside beyond.

The Garden
The large pond was created to look as natural as possible within the garden and was adjoined by a large low-maintenance shrub and perennial border. Marginal planting and planting around the pond edges will grow to disguise the pond liner completely with time. The waterfall was constructed from large pieces of slate and the gently sloping sides of the pond were filled with slate paddlestones to disguise the pond liner, to soften the outline of the pond and to provide access to the pond for wildlife. A gravel path with railway sleeper steps led to a large sunbathing and pond dipping, decked pontoon.
